Social Media Engagement Metrics by API: 2026 Study

2 of 9 social media APIs document a save count an AI agent can read with no extra condition. 3 of 9 document one with conditions.

Each platform's own social media analytics API documentation, 9 platforms, checked 14 October 2026, for an account owner's own posts. No extra condition means nothing beyond the API's normal access limits the metric. Where a platform has two APIs, it is counted by the one that documents more for each metric: TikTok's API for Business and LinkedIn's member post analytics.

2 of 9 platform APIs document a save count an agent can read for its own posts with no extra condition: X and TikTok's API for Business. Instagram (Feed posts and Reels only), LinkedIn (API version 202604 or later) and Pinterest (no lifetime total documented, last 90 days) have conditions. Bluesky defines a field without saying it returns data. Facebook and Threads document none, and YouTube's favoriteCount always returns 0.
8 of 9 document a share or repost count. Pinterest documents none.
3 of 9 document a follower history with no extra condition (TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube). X, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest document only today's count.
3 of 8 benchmark publishers checked use more than one engagement-rate definition for the same platform in their published benchmark figures: Buffer, Dash Social and Socialinsider.

How we did it: every documented metric is quoted from the platform's own API reference, changelog or developer guide, every absence names the pages checked, and every benchmark formula is quoted from the publisher's own pages, then re-checked live by a separate verification pass. The states are our classification of those quotes, under rules written before collection, with the clarifications disclosed in the Method. No API call, account or test post was used. Method.

Which social media APIs give an agent a save or share count?

X documents bookmark_count as a public post metric, and TikTok's API for Business documents favorites in its post metrics. TikTok's Display API documents no save field. Instagram documents saved for Feed posts and Reels only, LinkedIn's member post analytics added POST_SAVE in API version 202604, and Pinterest documents SAVE only for date ranges going back up to 90 days, with no lifetime save total. Bluesky's bookmarks are private, and its docs do not say whether bookmarkCount returns a count to the author. Share counts are widely documented: 8 of 9 platforms document one, and Pinterest is the exception.

Source: Blotato, Social Media Engagement Metrics by API: 2026 Study, checked 14 October 2026. "With conditions" means the docs limit the metric to some accounts, posts, media types or API versions, label it as in development, or document no lifetime total. Access every app needs for that API, such as app review or a business account, is not counted as a condition. TikTok is shown by its API for Business and LinkedIn by member post analytics. Can an agent get follower count at the time of a post?

On most platforms, only if it stores the count itself. X, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest document today's follower count and no history. TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube document a follower history with no extra condition, and Facebook documents one for Pages with 100 or more likes. These are daily series, so they give a post's publish day, not its exact time. TikTok's covers the last 60 days and its docs describe the daily value both as a total and as a net gain, LinkedIn's do not say which, and YouTube's are daily gains and losses. Instagram's follows_and_unfollows metric returns a total for a date range, and not at all below 100 followers, and the docs do not establish a follower series. To get rates by post, store the count at publish time.

When should an agent read the numbers?

Each platform sets its own read limits. One rule per platform, labelled with its API:

  • Instagram API: Media insights are stored for up to 2 years, with a delay of up to 48 hours. developers.facebook.com
  • Facebook Pages API: Most metrics update once every 24 hours. developers.facebook.com
  • TikTok API for Business (Accounts API): Post data stops updating 365 days after the post is published. business-api.tiktok.com
  • LinkedIn member post analytics: Counts are described as best-effort. learn.microsoft.com
  • X API v2: Non-public, organic and promoted metrics are only available for posts created within the last 30 days (public_metrics has no such limit stated). docs.x.com
  • Threads API: followers_count cannot be queried by date, so it returns the current value only. developers.facebook.com
  • Bluesky (AT Protocol): postView counts carry no stated window, retention limit or processing delay in the lexicon or reference pages checked. The lexicon documents no time semantics for likeCount, replyCount, repostCount, quoteCount or bookmarkCount (indexedAt is the post's index time only). github.com
  • YouTube Data and Analytics APIs: Analytics API data is not real-time. Processing typically adds a 48 to 72 hour latency. EndDate is truncated to the last fully processed day. Docs recommend the Data API for real-time counts. developers.google.com
  • Pinterest API v5: Pin analytics start_date cannot be more than 90 days back from today. developers.pinterest.com

Why do engagement rate benchmarks disagree?

They count different interactions and divide by different numbers. 3 of the 8 publishers we checked (Buffer, Dash Social and Socialinsider) use more than one engagement-rate definition for the same platform in their published benchmark figures, and most also give readers several formulas in their guides. Buffer's 2026 engagement report, which prompted this study, divides likes, comments, shares and saves by followers on one page, with variances for each platform, and divides engagements by reach, or the closest equivalent, on another. Its blog also gives two values for X's 2025 median. To score your own rate against a set of published benchmarks, each on its own basis, see the social media engagement rate calculator.

How published Instagram engagement benchmarks define the rate
Instagram rows from the benchmark pages checked. Interactions are grouped into this study's categories by Blotato, and each publisher's exact wording is in the dataset. Figures are not compared across publishers, because the bases differ. Metricool's study page states no formula, and its full report is gated and was not read.

Does the API document the inputs for a published engagement formula?

This checks whether each input is documented, not whether a publisher's multi-brand figure can be reproduced. Of the 23 benchmark rows checked platform by platform, 13 of 23 use only inputs the platform's API documents (2 of those with conditions), and 10 of 23 count clicks or other interactions this study did not check. Buffer's report formula is applied with variances for each platform, so it is listed but not checked platform by platform. Where a benchmark divides by followers, the matching number is the count on its measurement date, which X, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest document only as today's count, and Instagram's docs do not establish as a series.

What this means for builders

If your agent tunes what it posts on saves, keep it to the 5 platforms above that document a save count, within their conditions, and do not rely on a save count from the other 4. Store a follower count with every post where no history is documented, record when each metric was read, and match post age when comparing counts. Related: API changes since October 2024 and what platform rules let an AI agent do.

Where Blotato lands in this study

Blotato publishes this study and sells a social media API with analytics. Facts from help.blotato.com, read 14 October 2026.

  • Blotato returns post metrics for 8 of the 9 platforms. Its docs say LinkedIn fields "are part of the API schema but are not populated yet."
  • Saves come back as one common field, savesCount, defined as "Saves / bookmarks" and "Reported across platforms whenever the platform exposes them." The docs do not say which platform field fills it on each platform. Blotato docs
  • It documents no account follower-count field, so Blotato's documented fields do not provide the follower number to divide by.
  • It reports on posts published through Blotato, and reads return stored snapshots taken at set times after publishing, not a fresh fetch from the platform. Those set times mean every post on a plan is read at roughly the same ages, the matching step recommended above. Blotato docs

Where the docs disagree

Disagreements where two quotes describe the same metric or figure and the difference changes a formula, a date or a figure beyond rounding. Each is published as found, not resolved. Rounding-level differences, such as a figure given as 3.73% in text and 3.70% in a table, are in the dataset.

Method

Every documented metric is quoted verbatim from the platform's own developer pages, every absence names the pages checked, and each is classified under rules written before collection, with disclosed clarifications.

Full method
  • The question, set before collection. Which engagement numbers does each platform's own API give an agent for the account owner's posts, under what conditions, and read when? The headline counts saves. Each platform counts once, and where it has two APIs, by the one that documents more for that metric, a rule set before collection. Where both document the same, the count is the same either way.
  • States. No extra condition: a documented field the owner can read on the standard access path for that API. With conditions: the docs limit it to some accounts, posts, media types or API versions, label it as in development, or give no lifetime total and only a limited window. Unconfirmed: a field is defined but the docs do not establish it returns data. Not documented: no working field on the reference pages checked, which the dataset names. YouTube's favoriteCount is deprecated and always set to 0, so it counts as none. "Saves" means saved, bookmark, favorites or SAVE counts. YouTube playlist adds are shown separately and not counted as saves. Quote posts are not counted as shares. Instagram likes and comments carry no condition because the like_count and comments_count fields are not documented as limited by media type, while the saved metric is documented for Feed posts and Reels only.
  • Clarifications made after collection. Access every app needs for an API (app review, a business account, a product application) is recorded as access, not as a condition, and a requirement that applies to the whole API is access too. Retention and query windows are time-of-read facts, and a post metric counts as conditional on post age only when no lifetime value is documented, as with Pinterest saves. Follower series are account metrics, so their windows, such as TikTok's 60 days, are time-of-read facts too. Had they counted, TikTok's follower history would be conditional. Had TikTok's Accounts API application form, or its stop on updating post data 365 days after publishing, counted as a condition, 1 of 9 would document saves with no extra condition (X only). Had Pinterest's 90-day window not counted, 3 of 9 would. Counting Bluesky's bookmarkCount like its other counts also gives 3 of 9, and both changes together give 4 of 9.
  • Which platforms. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube and Pinterest, the 9 Blotato publishes to. TikTok's Research API is for non-profit academic research and is not counted.
  • Sources and checks. 111 metric cells across 11 APIs, 28 of them documented absences, plus 62 time-of-read and 96 access rows, and 83 engagement-rate formula rows from 8 publishers. The 45 that describe published benchmarks appear in the input check as 51 platform rows, and the rest are calculators, help-centre formulas, dashboard docs and benchmark notes with no rate formula, all in the dataset. A script confirmed every quote appears on the saved page and flagged any absence whose page mentions the metric's name, for a manual read. Separate verifiers re-read every source live, searched each platform's other reference pages for missed fields, confirmed TikTok's API for Business metrics, and found a 2026 Rival IQ edition, now used.
  • Limitations. This study reads documentation. It does not call the APIs, so it cannot show what a field returns in practice. Docs change, so each cell is as of 14 October 2026. Benchmark rebuild checks are for the account owner's own posts, while most benchmarks measure many brands' accounts.
QUESTIONS

Social media engagement API FAQs

01 Which social media APIs return a save count?
Of the 9 platforms checked, 2 document a save count an agent can read for its own posts with no extra condition: X (bookmark_count) and TikTok's API for Business (favorites). TikTok's Display API documents none. 3 more document one with conditions: Instagram (Feed posts and Reels only), LinkedIn member post analytics (API version 202604 or later) and Pinterest (no lifetime total documented, last 90 days). Bluesky defines a bookmarkCount field without documenting that it returns data. Facebook Pages and Threads document no save count, and YouTube's favoriteCount field is deprecated and always set to 0.
02 Can I get Instagram saves from the API?
The docs list it as the saved metric on the media insights endpoint, for feed posts and reels only. The Instagram API returns data only for professional (Business or Creator) accounts. The metrics table lists no saved metric for Stories.
03 Does the TikTok API return saves or favorites?
Not through the Display API, whose engagement fields are likes, comments, shares and views. TikTok API for Business documents favorites in its organic Accounts API post metrics, as lifetime values, and says post data stops updating 365 days after a post is published.
04 How can an agent get follower count at the time of a post?
Store it when the post goes out. TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube document a daily follower history with no extra condition (TikTok's covers the last 60 days), and Facebook documents one for Pages with 100 or more likes. X, Threads, Bluesky and Pinterest document only today's follower count, and Instagram's docs do not establish a follower series.
05 Why do engagement rate benchmarks disagree?
They count different interactions and divide by different numbers. Across the 6 benchmark publishers that state a basis for Instagram, rates are divided by followers, reach or views, and some count saves and shares while others count only likes and comments. Buffer's 2026 report states two formulas on two pages: likes, comments, shares and saves divided by followers, with variances for each platform, and engagements divided by reach, or the closest equivalent.
