Social media engagement rate calculator and scorecard

Paste your profile links, or pick your platforms and enter followers. You get what an average, strong and excellent post looks like at your size on each platform, how your audience is spread, and, if you add your own averages, your engagement rate and cadence against benchmarks published in 2026.

Bluesky links fill themselves from the public API. Every other platform needs one number: followers. Engagement and cadence are optional and give you the full grade.

HOW IT IS SCORED

How the scorecard grades your engagement rate

Most engagement rate calculators divide by followers on every platform and compare you to one number, so a TikTok creator and an Instagram brand get rates that cannot be compared. This one uses the denominator each platform's analytics provide and its benchmark uses, then scores against that benchmark.

Engagement rate = average interactions per post ÷ denominator × 100

Denominator: followers on Instagram, Facebook and X, subscribers on YouTube, views on TikTok and Threads, impressions on LinkedIn and Pinterest, and interactions per post on Bluesky, which publishes no reach. The Threads and Pinterest benchmarks are reach-based, so those two read slightly conservative.

Targets at your size = followers × benchmark rate. That is how the card turns 12,400 Instagram followers into "an average post gets 56 interactions, a strong one 124" before you enter anything else.

  • Engagement, 55%. Your rate against the platform benchmark, a strong bar and an excellent bar: the benchmark scores 50, strong 80, excellent 100, linear between and capped. Platforms are weighted by follower count. Optional: skip it and the score is built from the other two.
  • Cadence, 30%. Posts per week against the range in the table further down. Inside the range scores 100, below it proportionally, above it no penalty until double the top of the range. Optional.
  • Platform spread, 15%. How many of the 9 platforms you are on, with a deduction when one holds 85% or more of your followers. One platform scores 50, which caps a one-platform card at 93, and the card says so. Spread alone never produces a grade: with followers only you get targets, spread and the next change, and the grade waits for one performance number.

Grades: A is 85 and up, B 70 to 84, C 55 to 69, D 40 to 54, F below 40. The next change is picked in a fixed order: an under-posted platform, then the weakest engagement, then spread, then the biggest account's target.

Social media engagement rate benchmarks by platform

Every figure was read from the publisher's own report, and the table says whether that publisher reports an average (Socialinsider) or a median (Rival IQ, Buffer) and which period it covers. Strong and excellent bars are Blotato's, except on Instagram where they follow the Rival IQ bands Sprout Social cites.

Social media engagement rate benchmarks by platform for 2026, with the basis and statistic each publisher uses and the bars this scorecard scores against.
Platform Basis Benchmark Strong Excellent Source
Instagram by followerslikes + comments, divided by followers 0.45%average 1% 3% Socialinsider, H1 2026 averageStrong and excellent bars follow the Rival IQ bands Sprout Social cites: 1% is the top 25% of brand accounts, 3% and up is exceptional. Rival IQ's own 2026 median is 0.30%.
TikTok by viewslikes + comments + shares + saves, divided by views 3.85%average 6% 10% Socialinsider, Q2 2026 readingBy views, not followers. The five quarters before Q2 2026 ran 4.20% to 4.30%, so treat 3.85% as the current low. TikTok Studio shows views per video.
YouTube by followersall interactions, divided by subscribers 0.21%median 0.5% 1.2% Rival IQ (Quid) 2026 report, all-industry medianBy subscribers. YouTube joined the Rival IQ benchmark for the first time in the 2026 report.

Socialinsider notes its annual figure is 2025 data presented as 2026. Native documents averaged 7% for the year and 6.6% in Q2 2026.

Threads by viewslikes + replies + reposts + quotes, divided by reach 3.6%median 6% 10% Buffer, 2025 median from posts published through BufferBuffer divides by reach. Threads Insights shows views per post, the nearest figure you have, so your rate reads a little conservative against this bar.
Bluesky interactions per postlikes + replies + reposts per post, no denominator 4 per postmedian 12 per post 30 per post Buffer, 2025 median interactions per postNo rate exists: Bluesky publishes no reach or impression data, so every publisher reports a count instead. Pinterest by impressionsengagements, divided by reach 3.9%median 6% 10% Buffer, 2025 median from Pins published through BufferBuffer divides by reach. Pinterest analytics shows impressions per Pin, which run higher than reach, so your rate reads a little conservative. Sprout Social puts the typical range at 2% to 5% by impressions.
POSTING CADENCE

How often to post on each platform

Where Buffer's January 2026 guide and Hootsuite's April 2025 data disagree, the score takes the wider band so nobody is marked down for following either. Pinterest is the exception: its own guidance is weekly while Buffer and Tailwind say 15 to 25 a day, so only the weekly floor is scored.

Recommended posting frequency by platform, as used by the cadence score.
Platform Recommended Per week Source
Instagram 3 to 5 a week 3 to 5 Buffer and Hootsuite agree
TikTok 2 to 5 a week 2 to 5 Buffer (Hootsuite says 3 to 5)
YouTube 1 a week, up to 3 for Shorts 1 to 3 Buffer
Facebook 1 to 2 a day 5 to 14 Hootsuite and Buffer
LinkedIn 2 a week to 2 a day 2 to 14 Buffer says 2 to 5 a week, Hootsuite 1 to 2 a day
X 2 to 4 a day 14 to 28 Hootsuite says 2 to 3 a day, Buffer 3 to 4
Threads 2 to 3 a day 14 to 21 Hootsuite
Bluesky 1 to 3 a day 7 to 21 no published guidance; Blotato's own band
Pinterest at least 1 a week (scored on the floor only) 1 to 140 Pinterest says weekly, quoted by Hootsuite and Sprout Social; Buffer and Tailwind say 15 to 25 a day

The best time to post tool covers when to publish, and the posting limits table covers the ceilings each platform enforces.

WHAT TO DO WITH IT

From scorecard to schedule

The common pattern is that the main account is fed and the second and third platforms sit at one post a fortnight against a range that starts at two a week. Those posts are usually missing because publishing one idea to five networks is five jobs. Blotato publishes one post to all 9 platforms on this card from one queue, or from an AI agent through its API and MCP server, and its analytics return per-post metrics on 8 of them (LinkedIn returns no metrics yet).

If you run Blotato from Claude or another agent, the copy-for-your-AI-agent button hands it this exact table as text, so the next change is something the agent can act on. Publishing through an API does not itself cost reach; the evidence says no, and that post explains why.

FAQ

Engagement rate questions

01 What is a good engagement rate?
It depends on the platform and the denominator, which is why one number misleads. By followers, Socialinsider's 2026 averages are 0.45% on Instagram, 0.15% on Facebook and 0.10% on X, and Rival IQ's 2026 median for YouTube is 0.21% by subscribers. By views, Socialinsider's Q2 2026 reading for TikTok is 3.85%. By impressions, LinkedIn averages 5.2%. Sprout Social, citing Rival IQ, puts 1% on Instagram in the top 25% of brand accounts and calls 3% or more exceptional. The table below the tool shows the benchmark, a strong bar and an excellent bar for every platform.
02 How do you calculate engagement rate?
Add up the interactions on a post, divide by a denominator, multiply by 100. The denominator is the part people get wrong. Published benchmarks divide by followers on Instagram, Facebook, X and YouTube, by views on TikTok, and by impressions on LinkedIn. Buffer's Threads and Pinterest benchmarks divide by reach; you enter views or impressions, the nearest numbers those apps show, so those two read slightly conservative. Bluesky publishes no reach at all, so it is scored on interactions per post. This calculator uses the matching basis on every platform.
03 Does the tool pull my numbers from my profile link?
For Bluesky, yes: paste a bsky.app link and the card fills itself from Bluesky's public API. For every other platform the link only picks the platform and reads the handle, because Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Threads and Pinterest do not expose account data without the owner logging in, and YouTube needs an API key. A tool that grades those from a link is working from the public page, which is incomplete and, on most of them, against their terms. Here you enter one number, followers, and the rest is optional.
04 How often should I post on each platform?
The published ranges are 3 to 5 posts a week on Instagram and 1 to 2 a day on Facebook (Buffer, January 2026, and Hootsuite, April 2025, agree), 2 to 5 a week on TikTok, 2 a week to 2 a day on LinkedIn and 2 to 4 a day on X (the wider of the two guides where they differ), 1 a week on YouTube or up to 3 for Shorts (Buffer), and 2 to 3 a day on Threads (Hootsuite). Pinterest itself says at least once a week while Buffer and Tailwind say 15 to 25 a day, so the scorecard checks only the weekly floor there. Bluesky has no published guidance, so the scorecard uses its own band of 1 to 3 a day.
05 Can I save or share my scorecard?
Yes. Download it as an image, copy a link that rebuilds the card from the numbers in the URL, or copy the results as text to paste into Claude, ChatGPT or wherever you plan content. The scorecard does not save your numbers to a Blotato account or database, so the link is the save, and anyone you send it to can read the numbers in it.
