Instagram keeps a feed photo at its original resolution when it is 320 to 1080 pixels wide and between 1.91:1 landscape and 3:4 portrait.

Which portrait size to use

In 2025 Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that Instagram "now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos," the shape most phone cameras shoot. A 3:4 photo posted from the app at 1080 × 1440 now appears in the feed as shot.

Posts from scheduling tools take a different path. Meta's publishing API still lists 4:5 to 1.91:1 as its range, and 3:4 is taller than 4:5. Until that page changes, 1080 × 1350 is the tallest portrait size that is safe both ways.

Instagram size questions

01 Does this resizer upload my photo anywhere?
No. It is cropped on a canvas in your browser and saved from there, and the tool is hidden from the site's session recordings. It is free, with no signup or limit.
02 What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 × 1350, a 4:5 portrait, is the safe pick. At 1080 pixels wide, Instagram keeps any height from 566 to 1440, and 4:5 also works when a post is scheduled through Meta's publishing API.
03 Is Instagram 3:4 or 4:5 now?
Both. Since 2025 the app has taken 3:4 photos, up to 1080 × 1440, but Meta's publishing API still documents 4:5 as its limit. Use 3:4 in the app and 4:5 when a scheduling tool posts for you.
04 What size is an Instagram story?
9:16, and 1080 × 1920 is the usual export. The Story preset marks the margins Meta suggests for Story ads: 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom, 6% on each side. Instagram gives none for regular Stories, so use them as a guide.
05 How do I fit a whole photo on Instagram without cropping?
Choose Fit whole image. The full photo goes inside the frame, with a blurred copy or a color you pick filling the gap.
06 What happens if my photo is the wrong size?
Instagram crops a photo whose ratio is outside 1.91:1 to 3:4. It enlarges photos under 320 pixels wide to 320 and sizes down anything wider than 1080, so 1080 wide is the target. Enlarging a small original adds no detail.
07 Do all carousel photos have to be the same size?
In the app, the orientation you pick applies to every photo in the post. Through the API, every carousel image is cropped to match the first one, square by default. Resize them all to one preset first. Both allow up to 20 items.
08 What size is an Instagram profile picture?
Instagram does not publish one. It shows as a small circle, so our Profile preset exports a 1080 × 1080 square and marks the circle. Keep your face in the middle.
09 Should I use JPEG or PNG for Instagram?
JPEG. Meta's publishing API takes only JPEG, up to 8 MB, so a JPEG under 8 MB works on either route.
